Marcus Fabius Quintilianus was born on c. 35 AD in Calahorra, Spain. His father may have taught rhetoric there. At the age of 16, His father sent him to Rome to study rhetoric. He studied under Tiberius, Caligula and Nero. He became an advocate before moving back to Spain where he practiced law. He may have inspired worked of Cicero. In 68 AD, Quintilian returned to Rome after his teacher's death where he worked for Emperor Galba. In 72 AD, he appointed as a professor of rhetoric by the Emperor Vespasian.

In the early 80s, Quintilian married a very young woman. She died at the age of 18, after giving birth to two sons. In 88 AD, he was made the head of the "first public school of Rome' after being the assassination of Galba. Among Quintilian's students were Pliny the Younger and Tacitus. In 90 AD, he retired from teaching. Then he wrote his major work Institutio Oratoria. Though much of Quintilian writes is similar to Cicero, but he emphasizes teaching. He died on c. 100 AD in Rome, Italy.
