French novelist and dramatist Honoré de Balzac (20 May 1799-18 August
1850) presents a panorama of French life through his short stories and
novels after the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte.
He is considered one of the greatest novelists in world literature
and the founder of Realism. His writing influenced many subsequent
novelists and philosophers including Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx.
Early Life & Childhood: Honoré de Balzac was born on 20 May 1799 in Tours, France. At the age of
8, he was sent to the Oratorian grammar school in VendĂ´me, where he
studied for 7 years. It was difficult for him to adapt to the role of
this school. After then, he attended the Collège de Vendôme. In 1814,
his family moved to Paris. In Paris, Balzac studied with private tutors
and schools for the next two and a half years. In 1816, he entered the University of Paris where he studied civil and criminal law. In
1822, Balzac published Clotilde de Lusignan. Then he wrote La Dernière Fée.
Personal Life: Honoré de Balzac father was Bernard-François Balssa and mother named
Anne-Charlotte-Laure Sallambier. He came from a poor family. In 1821, he
met Laure de Berny who inspired his early writings. In March 1850,
Balzac married Ewelina Hańska after long-time love but unfortunately, he
died five months later.
Later Life & Death: In 1829, HonorĂ© de Balzac published his historical/political novel Les Chouans. In 1831, he published Le Chef-d’oeuvre inconnu, where he deals with philosophical views. An adaptation of William Shakespeare’s King Lear, Le Père Goriot was published in 1835. In 1836, Balzac published a poetic novel named Le Lys dans la vallĂ©e. In 1847, Balzac moved to Ukraine and then Paris. HonorĂ© de Balzac died on 18 August 1850. He was buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, France.
