Career:

Lionel Scaloni started his career as a player in the Argentine Primera División with Newell’s Old Boys in 1995. He then moved to Estudiantes de La Plata in 1996 and played for them until 1998. He was transferred to Spanish club Deportivo de La Coruña in 1998 and spent eight years with them, winning the La Liga title in 2000 and the Copa del Rey in 2002. He also played for West Ham United on loan in 2006.

He left Deportivo in 2006 and joined Racing Santander, where he played for one season. He then moved to Italy and signed for Lazio in 2007. He spent six years with Lazio, winning the Coppa Italia in 2009 and 2013. He also had a loan spell with Mallorca in 2008–09. He ended his playing career with Atalanta in 2015.

He began his coaching career as an assistant to Jorge Sampaoli at Sevilla in 2016. He followed Sampaoli to the Argentina national team in 2017 and became his assistant. He was appointed as the interim coach of Argentina in 2018 after Sampaoli left following a disappointing World Cup campaign. He was confirmed as the permanent coach in 2019.

He led Argentina to a third-place finish at the 2019 Copa America in Brazil, losing to the hosts in the semifinals. Lionel Scaloni was born in a small town called Pujato in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina, on May 16, 1978. His parents were Peter and Helen Scaloni, who worked as a farmer and a nurse respectively. He was an only child and grew up on a farm near Pujato. He loved football from a young age and played for his local team Pujato FC. He also did well in school and was interested in history and law.

He moved to Rosario, the largest city in Santa Fe, when he was 15 years old to join the youth academy of Newell’s Old Boys, one of the most popular clubs in Argentina.
