Career: Zion Williamson is a professional basketball player who currently plays for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is widely regarded as one of the most explosive and dominant players in the league, with a rare combination of size, strength, speed, agility, and skill. He plays the power forward position, but can also play as a small forward or a center.

Williamson started his basketball career at Spartanburg Day School in South Carolina, where he led his team to three consecutive state championships and earned national recognition for his highlight-reel dunks and blocks. He was named the South Carolina Mr. Basketball and the Naismith Prep Player of the Year in his senior year. He also participated in the McDonald’s All-American Game, the Jordan Brand Classic, and the Nike Hoop Summit.

Williamson then joined Duke University for his college basketball career, where he teamed up with fellow top recruits RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish. He had a sensational freshman season, averaging 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.1 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game. He won several awards, including the ACC Player of the Year, the ACC Rookie of the Year, the AP Player of the Year, the Sporting News Player of the Year, the Wayman Tisdale Award, and the John R. Wooden Award. He also became the first freshman to win the Naismith College Player of the Year and the Karl Malone Award. He led Duke to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Michigan State by one point.

Williamson declared for the 2019 NBA draft after his freshman season and was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans as the first overall pick. He missed most of his rookie season due to a knee injury, but still impressed in his debut game against the San Antonio Spurs on January 22, 2020. He scored 22 points in 18 minutes, including four consecutive three-pointers in the fourth quarter. He finished his rookie season with averages of 22.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting behind Ja Morant and Kendrick Nunn.

In his second season, Williamson improved his numbers to 27 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. He also increased his efficiency, shooting 61.1% from the field and 34.3% from beyond the arc. He made his first All-Star appearance as a reserve for Team Durant and became the fourth-youngest player in NBA history to do so. He also became one of only four players to average at least 25 points and seven rebounds on 60% shooting in a single season. He helped the Pelicans reach the play-in tournament, where they faced the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 12, 2023.
