Career: 

Jamie Foxx began his career as a stand-up comedian in 1989 after being challenged by a girlfriend to perform at a comedy club. He adopted his stage name Jamie Foxx to hide his gender and get more stage time. He soon became popular for his impersonations of celebrities and politicians.

In 1991, he joined the cast of the sketch comedy show In Living Color, where he created memorable characters such as Wanda the Ugly Woman and Carl “The Tooth” Williams. He also appeared in other TV shows such as Roc and The Royal Family.

In 1996, he launched his own sitcom The Jamie Foxx Show on The WB network. He played Jamie King Jr., an aspiring musician who works at his aunt and uncle’s hotel. He also co-created and produced the show, which ran for five seasons until 2001.

Early Life & Childhood: Jamie Foxx was born Eric Marlon Bishop on December 13, 1967, in Terrell, Texas. He is the son of Darrell Bishop, who worked as a stockbroker and later converted to Islam and changed his name to Shahid Abdula, and Louise Annette Talley Dixon, who was an adopted child. His parents divorced when he was seven months old, and he was adopted and raised by his maternal grandparents, Mark and Estelle Talley, who were devout Christians.

Foxx grew up in a racially segregated community in Terrell. He attended Terrell High School, where he was a star quarterback for the football team and a top student. He also joined the Boy Scouts and the church choir. He developed a passion for music and comedy at a young age and learned to play the piano by ear.
