Pliny the Younger (ca. 61 - ca. 112) was an author, lawyer administrator
and magistrate of Ancient Rome. Pliny was a great letter writer. He
wrote hundreds of letters, many of which still survive and offer
intimate glimpses into public and private life during the Roman Empire.
Early Life: Pliny the Younger was born in ca. 61 AD in Como (A city in Italy).
Unfortunately, he lost his father soon and was adopted by his uncle
Pliny the Elder. After being first tutored at home, Pliny moved to Rome
where he was taught by Quintilian with Tacitus,
the city's first professor of rhetoric. In 79 AD, Pliny the Elder died
during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. As a result, Pliny the Younger
inherited the estate of his uncle. In the 80s, he worked as an officer of the
noble order of knights.
Personal Life: Pliny the Younger married 3 times. 1st about 18, he married a
stepdaughter of Veccius Proculus. He became a widower at age 37 and
married secondly to the daughter of Pompeia Celerina. At last, he married Calpurnia, the daughter of Calpurnius.
Later Life & Death: In 91 AD, Pliny the Younger became Tribune of the People and became
Praetor in 93 AD. From 94 to 96 AD, he served as prefect of the military
treasury and from 98 to 100 AD, as prefect of the treasury of Saturn. In 100
AD, he was appointed consul. In 103 AD, Pliny the Younger publicly
elected Augur. From 104 to 107, he became a member of Trajan's judicial council three times. In 110 AD, Emperor Trajan appointed him Governor of Bithynia. Pliny the Younger died in ca. 112 AD in Bithynia, the Roman region.
