Irish novelist and poet James Joyce (February 1882 - January 1941) is
considered one of the most influential writers of the early 20th
century. By A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916, novel), he caught the attention of Ezra Pound. Joyce is best known for his novel, Ulysses (1922) which was written following the episodes of Homer's Odyssey.
Early Life & Childhood: James Augusta Aloysius Joyce was born on 02 February 1882 in Rathgar,
Ireland. At the age of 6, he was admitted to Clongowes Wood College, a
Jesuit boarding school. Then, he entered Belvedere College in Dublin
where studied from 1893 to 1897. In 1895, Joyce was elected to join the
Sodality of Our Lady. In 1898, he entered the University College, Dublin
where he studied English, French and Italian. In 1902, he moved to
Paris after his graduation. In Paris, Joyce served as a journalist,
teacher and other occupations because of his difficult financial
conditions. He returned one year later.
Personal Life: James Joyce's father, John Stanislaus Joyce was a tax collector for the
city of Dublin and his mother was named Mary Jane Murray. Despite their
poverty, his parents struggled to maintain a solid middle-class facade.
In 1904, Joyce met Nora Barnacle and fell in love. On 04 July 1931,
The couple married in London.
Later Life & Death: In 1904, James Joyce left Dublin with Nora Barnacle. From 1906 to 1907, he worked at a bank in Rome. In 1914, he published Dubliners. In 1916, Joyce published A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. In 1922, he published his most famous work, Ulysses. In 1923, Joyce began writing his 2nd major work, Finnegans Wake. The first part of this novel was published in Ford Madox Ford's transatlantic review in April 1924. The final version of this novel was published in 1939. James Augusta Aloysius Joyce died on 13 January 1941. He was buried at Fluntern Cemetery, Zürich, Switzerland.
