The Italian painter Giovanni Bellini (c. 1430-1516) was an Italian Renaissance painter. His father was Jackpot Bellini, his brother was Gentile Bellini, and his brother-in-law was Andrea Mantegna. Bellini was born and died in Venice during a time when the La Sereneness, or the Venetian Republic, was a formidable trading power and crossroads of Europe. His importance can scarcely be overemphasized in that he brought Venetian painting up to date and set it on the path that led to the art of Titian.
