William Ewart Gladstone (29 December 1809-19 May 1898) is considered a dominant and controversial figure in the Victorian Era thought out England who led the British statesman of the 19th century. He led the Liberal party and served as prime minister from the 1830s to the 1890s. His strong religious sense was an integral part of his political and social policies.

Early Life & Childhood: William Ewart Gladstone was born on 29 December 1809 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. From 1816 to 1821, he was educated at a preparatory school. In 1821, he was admitted to Eton College where he studied next seven years. In 1828, William entered Christ Church, Oxford, where he read Classics and Mathematics. In December 1831, he gained a double first-class degree. Then he worked as President of the Oxford Union debating society where he built up his reputation as an orator, which helped him into the House of Commons. In 1832, he was elected as Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Newark. In December 1834, William was appointed as a Junior Lord of the Treasury in Sir Robert Peel's first ministry. In 1835, he lost office when Peel resigned. In 1841, he was re-elected. In 1843, William was promoted to the post of president.

Later Life & Death: In 1847, William Ewart Gladstone was elected the Conservative MP for Oxford University. In 1852, he became Chancellor of the Exchequer of Whigs and Peelites when Lord Aberdeen became Prime Minister. In June 1859, Lord Palmerston became Prime Minister and offered William the post of Chancellor of the Exchequer. In the general election of Oxford University, William moved from the Conservative Party in 1865 and he lost his seat. In the general election of December 1868, the Conservatives were defeated and William Gladstone became Prime Minister as the leader of the Liberal Party. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four separate times (1853–1855, 1859–1866, 1873–1874 and 1880–1882) and Prime Minister four times (1868–1874, 1880–1885, February–July 1886 and 1892–1894). He died on 19 May 1898. He was buried at Westminster Abbey, London, England.
