Priest, sociologist and philosopher Saint Augustine of Hippo (13
November 354 – 28 August 430) was a Father of the Church. He is one of
the major thinkers in the history of Western thought. His writings are
regarded as influential in the development of Western Christianity and
philosophy. Augustine was influenced by his mother (Saint Monica), Cicero, Plotinus, Ambrose, Anthony the Great, Paul the Apostle, Cyprian, Plato, Socrates etc.
Early Life & Childhood: Augustine was born in 354 in the municipium of Thagaste (now Souk Ahras,
Algeria) in Roman Africa. His father, Patricius was a pagan and his
mother, Saint Monica was a Roman Catholic. At the age of 11, he was sent
to school at Madaurus (now M'Daourouch). There he became familiar with
Latin literature and was influenced by the writings of Cicero.
In 371 at the age of 17, he moved to Carthage in order to continue his
education in rhetoric. In 375 Augustine started his own school in
Carthage. He taught in Tagaste and Carthage and in 383 opened a similar
school in Rome. However, Augustine grew disappointed with the Roman
schools but he developed a reputation as a fine teacher and in 384 the
prefect of the City of Rome.
Personal Life: In Carthage (Tunis, Tunisia), Augustine lived with a woman and he
had a son in 372, Adeodatus, (which means Gift of God). It is believed
that Augustine truly loved the woman. He had lived with her for a long
time. He abandoned them finally on his conversion in 389 and was deeply
hurt by ending this relationship.
Later Life & Death: Augustine went to Italy in 383, studying Neo-platonic philosophy and
became a pupil of Ambrose. In 386, Augustine read an account of the life
of Saint Anthony of the Desert which inspired him to return to the
Catholic Church. He gave up his teaching career in Milan and moved back
to Africa. Soon afterwards, his mother and son both died in a few
days. He has ordained a priest in 391. From 396 till his death in 430,
he ruled the diocese alone. Augustine died on 28 August 430 and was buried at Saint Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia, Italy.
