Early Life: Richard Hooker was an Anglican priest. He is mostly remembered for his work Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity. Hooker was born on ca. March 1554 in Heavitree, Exeter, Devon, England. He came from a good family. His family was neither noble nor wealthy. He attended Exeter Grammar School until 1569. In 1577, he was admitted to Corpus Christi College, Oxford. In July 1577 he proceeded to M.A., and in September of the same year, he has admitted as a fellow. In 1579, Hooker was appointed a priest and then bishop of London. In 1580, he was divested of his fellowship.

Later Life: In 1581, Richard Hooker was appointed to preach at St. Paul's Cross. In 1584, he became rector of St. Mary's Drayton Beauchamp, Buckinghamshire. In 1585, he was appointed Master of the Temple Church in London. In 1591, he left the Temple for Wiltshire for supporting him while writing. In 1593, Hooker published his first major work Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity in four volumes. In 1595, Hooker became Rector of the parishes of St. Mary the Virgin in Bishopsbourne and St. John the Baptist Barham in Kent. Richard Hooker died on 03 November 1600. He was buried at St. Mary Churchyard, Bishopsbourne, Kent, England.
