Early Life & Childhood: Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens on 30 November 1835 in
Florida, Missouri, United States. When he was only four, his family
moved to Hannibal, Missouri. In 1847, his father died of pneumonia. In
1851, he got a job as a typesetter and contributor along with an occasional
writer for the Hannibal Journal. In 1853, he left
Hannibal and then began working as a printer in New York City,
Philadelphia, St. Louis and Cincinnati. In 1857, Twain visited New
Orleans and began learning the art of piloting. In 1859, he was able to gain
his license and soon joined as a pilot plying the shoals and channels of
the great river. In 1861, he left his job for the Civil War though he
loved his job. In 1863, Mark Twain began to write a humorous account of
his travel. After that, he moved to San Francisco and started working as
a journalist and lecturer.

Later Life & Death: In 1867, Mark Twain visited Europe and the Middle East. In 1869, Twain published a collection of travel letters named The Innocents Abroad. In 1871, he moved to Hartford with his wife. In 1876, he published The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. In 1884, Mark Twain published Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
in the UK & Canada and the following year in the United States. In 1888, he was
awarded a Master of Arts degree from Yale University. In 1895, he left
home for a world tour and visited Australia, Canada, India and New
Zealand. In 1901, Twain received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from
Yale University. In 1907, he was awarded the same award from Oxford
University. In 1908, he moved to his home in Redding. He died of a heart
attack on 21 April 1910. Mark Twain was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, New York, United States.
